PLYMOUTH BARBICAN Multi exposure

Section 1: Introduction

With a basic understanding of the techniques needed to produce a multiple exposure image in the comfort of our home I wanted to take this technique onto the street and into a real environment. Furthermore having got to grips with producing images with multiple equal exposures the next step was to look at and aim to master producing images with multiple exposure but where each exposure is different so as to give different parts of the image different levels of intensity.

Section 2: Objectives

My aim with this shoot was to investigate how the technique of multiple exposure could be harnessed to produce interesting images which. captured the energy and movement of the city centre. At this stage I was creating images with equal exposure across all frames. Using the exposure formula explained in my Essay I produced a series of images IN CAMERA that have a similarity to the work of  Burnham Arlidge how ever would be produced in camera and would not involve manipulation in photoshop.

Section 3: Methodology (Materials & Methods)

Using a Canon 1Dxiii camera and both 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses and the camera fitted to a tripod I wanted to make a series of multiple exposure images in the city centre. Image exposure levels calculated in advance and altered for each frame. Final image graded in Lightroom but with no photoshop intervention.

Section 4: Results

It is interesting to see how by zooming in and out on the scene it as possible to create wonderful busy images that combined both the chaos of the city centre with the structure and uniformity of the buildings

Section 5: Critique

Several of the images were either over or under exposed and areas of bright sunshine tended to burn out. I also discovered that the best images had contrast in colour rather than contrast in light and shade. The inclusion of strong horizontal and vertical elements made a very strong impact.

Section 6: Learning Outcomes

The images below demonstrate the final results. The best and strongest images had a single element of focus amidst the intentional confusion of the image.
